Is it true that nectarines are an apple/peach hybrid? If so, why wasn't the result a furry apple?

• Not apple/peach - plum/peach. I have no idea why the result wasn't hairy plums (other than to suggest that they already existed before the nectarine).

• A nectarine is not a hybrid of anything - it is merely a smooth-skinned peach. They've been cultivated as long as furry peaches.
