No:1650: Jaid Barrymore

Oh dear, another Barrymore tale of drugs, drink and general excess.

Selfish child! Apparently, Drew was a little annoyed when Jaid auctioned her daughter's babyclothes over the internet. Posing for Playboy in 1995 - nine months after her daughter - caused some friction, and trying to steal Drew's boyfriends didn't go down too well either.

Quick biog, please. Born Ildiko Jaid in Munich, she worked her way across America in various nightclubs before meeting John Drew Barrymore, the son of a famous actor, in a club on Sunset Strip. She was manager to her daughter before the relationship took a downturn and the then 15-year-old Drew sued.

So how is Mrs Barrymore trying to reconcile with Drew? She has taken the touchingly maternal approach of publishing a book about her ungrateful daughter and useless husband.

And what is the title of this confidence-breaking autobiography? Um, In Confidential.

I seem to remember having read something else by Jaid Barrymore... Ah yes, that would have been Secrets of World Class Lovers: Erotic Tips & Sensual Stories for a Lifetime of Sexual Fulfilment.

Did she learn these tips from Drew's father? Unlikely. His (apparently successful) chat-up line to Jaid was: "You are the brood mare I have spent my entire life looking for."

Charming. The beginning of a long and happy relationship, then. Not quite. The romantic pair split up before Drew was born, and John Drew has been enjoying the hospitality of various rehab centres for the past 10 years.

But surely Jaid is proud of her successful offspring? Her comment, "I was going to be the star, not her! Drew got all the attention... It was so disgusting," would suggest not.

Drew's response? "You don't want guys like these to be your mom and dad."

Don't say: "You must be so proud of Drew, Mrs Barrymore."
