Inside Move: The leaves of October

Indie team still raking it in

With long-lost October Films co-founder Bingham Ray finally alighting at United Artists ( Variety, Aug. 6-13), industryites looking to complete their October scorecards can fill in the following players:

Jeff Lipsky. The Marketer. Founded October with Ray in 1991. Left abruptly in 1995. Now president of distribution at indie distrib Lot 47 Films, which he co-founded with his brothers Scott and Mark.

John Schmidt. The Banker. The former Miramax chief financial officer joined October in 1992 as a partner. Left October in 1999, when it was sold to Barry Diller and became USA Films. Now working with producer Edward R. Pressman on a digital production initiative.

Amir Malin. The Dealmaker. The Cinecom founder came in as a partner shortly after October’s founding. Two months after October was acquired by Universal, he left to launch Artisan Entertainment. Currently CEO of Artisan, which may be entertaining a deal to buy or merge with, or be sold to, Lions Gate Films.

Scott Greenstein. The Hustler. Left Miramax to join October as partner and co-president shortly after Malin’s exit. Now chairman of USA Films, where he reports to the recently appointed Michael Jackson, president and CEO of USA Entertainment.
